Bukenya applauds Cardinal over condom stand

New Vision - December 28, 2004
Josephine Maseruka

THE Vice-President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya has hailed Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala for his firm stand against the use of condoms to fight HIV/AIDS.

Addressing Christians at Rubaga Cathedral on Christmas during the 10:00 O'clock service, Bukenya appealed to Ugandans to be just in whatever they do and to learn to give credit where it is due.

He said, "Cardinal Wamala has stood firm against the use of condoms in the fight against AIDs but he has been criticised for his remarks.

After several years since the Cardinal's warning on condom use, no one has come out to commend him even after realising the truthfulness of his message."

The Ministry of Health is under attack after reports that Engabu condoms, which have been used in the country, were defective and had holes. Ten million condoms have been withdrawn from the market.

Bukenya appealed to Catholics to take a lead in the fight against AIDs and encouraged marrieds to be faithful to each other.

He counselled Ugandans on the need to be trustworthy, saying if people were trusted, they would love one another and there would be peace and development in the country.

He urged the rich to invest in developing rural areas. He said this year, rice farmers had a bumper crop and appealed to city dwellers to support rice growing instead of rebuking those advocating for it.

Wamala said next year, Uganda would host a conference for Catholic bishops from eight African countries.

He said every country would give a report on how HIV/AIDs has affected its people and find a common way forward.

Wamala urged Christians to fight AIDs through abstinence and told the youth to abstain from sex.

Parliament Speaker Edward Ssekandi, Katikkiro Joseph Ssemwogerere and Dr. Paul Ssemwogerere attended the service.
