Masindi Diocese row ends

New Vision - December 22, 2004
Fred Kayizzi and Kyetume Kasanga

A ROW over the election of Stanley Ntagari as Bishop of Masindi-Kitara Diocese has ended.

A section of the laity contested the election, saying the procedures were illegal. John Majara, Ernest Kiiza and Jacob Karubanga petitioned the High Court to nullify the election but the case was dismissed with costs.

The Court of Appeal also dismissed the case and advised the petitioners to file another one after Ntagari's installation. Ntagari was installed at St. Matthew's Cathedral in Masindi on Sunday.

At the function, Majara confessed salvation and apologised for opposing Ntagari. He urged the Church to support the new Bishop. "By-gones are by-gones. I congratulate Bishop Stanley Ntagari and pledge allegiance and support to him," Majara said as he hugged and offered Ntagari a bull.

Archbishop Luke Orombi inaugurated the new diocese, bringing the number of Church of Uganda dioceses to 31.

He described the diocese as a baby delivered by caesarean section, "but the beauty of it is that the baby is alive and its mother is in good health."

He said, "I personally forgive you (Majara), my dear son. I also forgive your colleagues, Ernest Kiiza and the other one (Karubanga)."

Kiiza and Karubanga were absent.

In a speech read by the Third Deputy Priemier Henry Muganwa Kajura, President Yoweri Museveni urged the Church to initiate development programmes targeting women.

Museveni said the church should address the material welfare of its followers through HIV/AIDS education. He said the Church would be weakened if its followers starved or died of disease.
