Condoms are enough û govt

New Vision - December 20, 2004
John Odyek

THE Government has dismissed fears about condom shortage. "There is no crisis with condoms. There are enough safe condoms in the country. Arrangements are in place to ensure that there is a continuous supply of safe condoms," health minister Brig. Jim Muhwezi told a press conference on Friday at the ministry boardroom.

The conference was to clarify on condom supply and Nevirapine, a drug used to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDs. Muhwezi said, "It is true that one consignment of Engabu condoms was detected to have a smelling problem but was quickly withdrawn from circulation."

He said other Engabu condoms were safe.

Dr Phillipa Musoke, head of the Pediatric department at Makerere University, said Nevirapine was used worldwide.

Musoke was speaking as part of the team that researched on the drug at Mulago Hospital in 1999. She said the drug reduces mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS by 50%.

A single dose of the drug is given to an HIV-infected women in labour and to their babies at birth.

Musoke said the concern for the drug side effects had not been shown to occur unless it was used for care and treatment.
