Legislators want more condoms imported for Christmas season

New Vision - December 17, 2004

MPs have called upon the ministry of health to streamline the procedures of importing condoms so that more condoms could be provided during the festive season.

The New vision this week reported that condom shortage was expected nationwide because the government's Engabu brand had been frozen and the procedures for approving new imports lengthened.

Dan Kidega (youth northern) said, "We shall hold a demonstration because the youth need condoms. The ministry should improve on its planning skills and the procedure of importing condoms should be streamlined to make sure that condoms are in stock constantly.

"We are going to the festive season and the youth should be equipped because they tend to engage more in sex during the festive season."

The state minister for public service, Okumu Ringa, said the condom shortage could cause a crisis. He urged the Uganda Aids commission to ensure that more condoms are imported.

He, however, said as a parent, he advocated abstinence among the unmarried. He said condoms should be used as a last resort.

Rose Namayanja (youth central) said people need condoms to guard against HIV/AIDS. She said the shortage was a pity because "some people in villages had just started using condoms."
