TASO gets two more centres

New Vision - December 17, 2004

THE AIDS Support Organisation (TASO) has embarked on an expansion programme upcountry, establishing regional care and support centres for HIV/AIDS clients in Masindi and Gulu towns.

TASO executive director Dr. Alex Coutinho said this brings the centres countrywide to five, after Mulago, Mbale and Mbarara.

In a speech read by the central regional manager, Naome Gonahasa, in Masindi on Tuesday, Coutinho said the district had qualified for a centre because it lacked sufficient facilities and organisations to support HIV/AIDS clients.

An assessment of Masindi for a TASO centre was done last August.

The LC5 chairman, John Majara, awarded certificates to 20 participants who completed an advanced course in HIV/AIDS counselling.

They included doctors, clinical officers, nurses and other health staff from across the district. "You are expected to take effective charge of difficult situations of clients without compromising the quality of your service," Majara said.

the programme coordinator of the voluntary counselling and testing services, Beatrice Kakongoro, said the HIV prevalence rate in the district was still high at 15%, with women most hit. The national figure is 6.1%.
