Popping the cork for East Africa's popstars

New Vision - December 3, 2004
Raphael Okello

IT IS OFFICIAL! East Africa's Coca-Cola popstars will for the first time perform at the same venue during two charity concerts organised by Coca-Cola and Sheraton Hotel Kampala.

Uganda's BLU*3, Kenya's SEMA and Tanzania's WAKILISHA, are all a product of last year's Coca-Coca popstars talent search.

The groups will make first public appearance during a VIP concert at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel on Friday December 10, 2004 and then a fully blown concert at Lugogo Cricket grounds on December 11, 2004.

Since last year's two-month training in South Africa, the three groups have either produced heart throbbing singles or an album that has received a lot of airplay on national and regional radio and television stations.Popularly associated with singles like Frisky and Kanchachanche, a Luganda love ballad, Uganda's BLU*3 will finally drop a uniquely packaged 13-track album titled Hitaji.

From five of the sampled tracks, this album will drop with a hard bang. It exceptionally explores Swahili, luganda and English lyrics, remarkably laced against a backdrop of Reggae, R&B, hip-hop, dancehall and Indian influenced rhythms. Each song affects the listener differently.

"We wanted to produce an exceptional album that doesn't only have one hit song or appeal to a specific class of people. The girls worked very hard and I know the audience will acknowledge their efforts.

The diversity in language and beats will capture a wider East African audience," Steve Jean, BLU*3 producer and owner of Fenon Records said.

For instance, Hitaji, the title track, is destined to become an instant East African hit. The song, written by Jackie Chandiru (BLU*3 member) is a fusion of R&B and dancehall sang in Swahili and English.

Local celebrated musicians like Steve Jean, Michael Ross, Keffa Mwesigwa, Ragga Dee and Peter Miles will perform in the concert that is most likely to last the entire night.

Lighting systems are going to be imported from Kenya and South Africa while sound will be courtesy of Charlie Sounds.

Proceeds from the two concerts will go towards HIV/AIDS orphans in UWESO and Sanyu Babies Home. Entrance to the cricket grounds will be sh5,000.
