Condoms vital

New Vision - December 2, 2004

WORLD Aids Day yesterday was marked by further debate over the role of the condom. But the fight against HIV should not be derailed by vilifying the condom.

There have been complaints over the distribution of condoms in secondary schools but there is no evidence that this has ever happed. It is an 'urban myth'.

Similarly people argue that condoms don't prevent all sexually communicated diseases but no one ever claimed that they did. The argument was only that they greatly reduce the risk of infection (and pregnancy).

Condoms are still essential in the fight against Aids. For instance, what is a married couple supposed to do when one partner is positive and the other negative? In that case, a condom is a moral imperative.

Yes, let us push for Abstinence for young people, and Be Faithful for adults, but let's not stigmatise Condoms. The ABC strategy is still vital for the future of humanity.
