Janet to host 70,000 virgins

New Vision - December 1, 2004

OCER 70,000 youth who took a pledge to abstain from sex until marriage will be hosted to a bash organised by the First Lady, Janet Museveni.

The bash, slated for December 10, 2004, is one of the highlights of the World AIDS day.

Mrs. Museveni's anti-AIDS campaign through the Uganda Youth Forum (UYF) has seen over 70,000 youth sign up pledges to abstain from premarital sex since 1992.

UYF officials said the number could be higher than 70,000 because other organisations like the Scripture Union, True Love waits, Youth Alive and Family Life Network, have also been receiving pledges.

The bash will start with a march from the constitutional Square, flagged off by the First Lady at 10:00am. The youth will march to Kitante Primary School, where they will share testimonies and have fun for the whole day.

UYF coordinator Margaret Kiwanuka said the number of youth signing up pledges was rising.

She said Mrs. Museveni started the campaign after realising that youth were falling victim to manipulation into sexual activity by older people. Kiwanuka said the youth were even more vulnerable because of the communication gap between them and their parents.

She said the UYF was started as a platform for the youth to express themselves and have their issued addressed.

Kiwanuka said the UYF promoted spiritual and moral values as primary pillars of integrity and responsibility.

She said the youth were sensitised on unhealthy behaviour and practices like drug and substance abuse and violence.

Kiwanuka said the UYF published a regular newsletter for the youth to help them develop life skills and appreciation of their cultures and corresponding values and respect for themselves.
