Lodoi Development Fund (LDF) is one of the few organisations striving to improve the livelihood of the people of Pallisa district.
Started in 1999 by Dr. Patrick Mutono and Helen Mutono, LDF focuses on the environment, agriculture, micro-finance, education, water and community sanitation. "LDF efforts are aimed at helping people help themselves," says Helen Mutono, the executive director.
Based in Mbale town, Lodoi runs a clinic; Kanginima Medical Centre (KMC), in Kanginima, serving nearly 7,000 families.
She says Lodoi is sponsoring one child in each of the 950 poor families.
"Presently, only 890 of these children have sponsors. We need more sponsorship for the other children," Mutono says.
Lodoi targets children affected by HIV/AIDS, orphans, the girl child and children living with disabilities. "We have seen a 70% reduction in child mortality for those under the age of 5 years," says Mutono.
KMC serves a population of approximately 40,000 people from Kabwangasi and Kakoro sub-counties. KMC provides Out-patient and In-patient care, Antenatal and Maternity facilities, Immunisation, Lab, Eye Care, Family Planning, Dental, Surgery, X-ray and Ultrasound facilities.
Most of the patients who visit the centre for treatment report Malaria cases, diarrhoea, pneumonia, anaemia and worms.
