No Virgins in Iganga

New Vision (Kampala) - July 2, 2004
George Bita, Kampala

A RECENT survey by the directorate of health services in Iganga has revealed that there are no virgins above 16 years of age in the district.

The acting district health inspector, Francis Kyakulaga, said the research involved 3,000 male and female respondents in the sub-counties of Waibuga, Bulamagi and Iganga town council.

"There are virtually no virgins by the time these people reach the official mature age of 18.

Interestingly, in the 10-14 years age bracket, we got 0% sexually active girls, so most probably they are holy up to about 14 and then the demons invade them, prompting them to have sex before they turn 18," he said.

Kyakulaga said this on Friday at East View Guest House in Iganga town at a workshop organised by the Family Planning Association of Uganda, Iganga branch, to sensitise community leaders.

The Iganga district director of health services, Dr. David Muwanguzi, said the research indicates that most females fear going for HIV testing and counselling.

"Only 11% of females out of the sexually-active respondents had managed to go for voluntary counselling and testing services to determine their HIV status," Muwanguzi said.
