Jinja Battles Aids

New Vision (Kampala) - December 15, 2003

Over 700 children and students in Jinja District have taken to the streets with banners and placards to sensitise the public about HIV/AIDS.

The campaign which took place recently, included a parade in Jinja town that commenced at the AIDS Information Centre (Jinja) and proceeded to Main Street Primary School, where they were joined by the public.

Many of the pupils and students involved were members of health and AIDS clubs in Jinja. Among the messages the participants imparted were "virginity is healthy" and "no condom no sex." The mayor of Jinja, David Wakudumira advised the residents to test for HIV as the only sure way of knowing their sero-status.

Residents tested for a reduced rate of sh1,500 from sh4,000 where all got testers free soda from Crown Beverages and other prizes that included a rafting trip from Nile River Explorers, and a meal at Sheraton Kampala Hotel.

Forty-nine people tested and five tested positive. However even though prizes were announced, many people were still reluctant to test.
