VP Hails US On HIV/Aids Aid

New Vision (Kampala) - December 3, 2003

VICE-President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya yesterday commended the US government for the support it has given to Uganda and other developing countries in the fight against HIV/AIDS, writes Vision Reporter.

Meeting US ambassador Jimmy Kolker in Kakiri, Bukenya said the US had given crucial support to the anti-AIDS programme and urged that the support be extended to fighting poverty.

"In the next phase of actually treating people with HIV/AIDS, it will also be time to introduce projects that will increase household income. That helps improve the nutrition and livelihood of people and they get healthier," he said.

Kolker, accompanied by staff and Centre for Disease Control associate director for Science, Dr. Rebecca Bunnell, paid a courtesy call on Bukenya to brief him on the impending visit by US Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tommy Thompson.

Thompson, former Governor of Wisconsin for 14 years, arrives in Kampala tommorrow for a four-day visit. He will tour HIV/AIDS projects in Tororo, Jinja and Kampala.

On his way to Uganda, Secretary Thompson will pass through Zambia, neighbouring Rwanda and the Republic of Kenya.
