Instant HIV/Aids Testing Soon, Says Muhwezi

THE Ministry of Health is to get equipment to test HIV/AIDS instantly, the minister, Brig. Jim Muhwezi, has said.

He was on Wednesday reacting to concerns by MPs during a debate of a report of the standing committee on HIV/AIDS.

Members of Parliament from Kanungu, Kalangala and Kamwenge districts said they did not have testing centres.

Muhwezi said, "We are in the process of procuring equipment to test AIDS in 10 seconds." he said. He said this would enable individuals know their status.

He said orphans would be the first people to get anti retroviral drugs (ARVs).

He concurred with MPs that it was good to give girls free sanitary towels. Ruth Kavuma (Kalangala) said some parents encouraged their daughters to get pregnant to avoid the expense of buying towels.

She called for investigation of orphanages, saying some children were being used as sex workers.

The committee expressed concern that between 100,000 to 150,000 people in Uganda would die soon if they do not have access to ARVs sooner.

Jacqueline Kyatuhire (Kanungu) said the Government was putting more emphasis on the people already affected yet giving ARVs was more costly. Steven Malinga (Butebo) said all women should be tested for cancer of the cervix.
