Safeguard Aids Drugs, Says Reform Agenda

New Vision (Kampala) - December 2, 2003
Cyprian Musoke

THE Reform Agenda has asked the Government to safeguard anti-AIDS funds and drugs from abuse by sprouting anti-aids organisations and medical bureaucrats.

They said their research had revealed many 'brief-case' organisations that have cropped up to take advantage of the global Aids funds.

"Reform Agenda joins hands with the rest of the world in celebrating the World AIDS day. We wish to identify with those who have declared their status like Philly Lutaaya and Maj. Rubaramira Ruranga," said deputy secretary general Louis Otika.

"But there is a problem of side implementers. We noted that when USA gave in money, many brief-case organisations emerged to take advantage of the situation.

Government should seriously monitor them if we are to see results of the money," he said.

He said the Government is duty-bound to provide right channels for the money, which should ideally be given to TASO.

Speaking at the Reform Agenda weekly press briefing at Bukoto yesterday, Otika dismissed as false statements attributing Uganda's success story in fight against AIDS to President Yoweri Museveni and or the Minister of Health.
