The IRC's HIV/AIDS programme manager, Dr Nelson Okone, said last week they targeted lodges and bars because most people frequent them.
"It is normally in the bars and lodges where people, after getting drunk tend to indulge in activities that can lead into sex. So if revellers find they cannot control themselves, at least they would have free condoms at hand to protect themselves," Okone said.
There are about 20 lodges in Kitgum town. IRC recently trained about 70 bars and lodge workers on condom distribution. They were also sensitised on the dangers and spread of HIV/AIDS scourge.
IRC's HIV/AIDS programme assistant Esther Opoka said the distribution of free condoms to the lodges should not be seen as encouraging immorality in society but rather the choice between life and death.
Opoka said the distribution is being done in conjunction with the Kitgum district directorate of health services. The HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in Kitgum district is 9 percent, three points higher than the national average of 6 percent.
