The AAI gave the award at a dinner hosted by the institute at the UN headquarters in New York while marking 50 years of its existence.
AAI hailed Uganda's dramatic reduction of the HIV/AIDS rate from 18% to 5% in less than 10 years, owing to vigorous public education campaigns spearheaded by Museveni. The award, known as "AAI African National Achievement Award," was also bestowed on Kenya for its crusade against corruption.
Museveni expressed happiness with the AAI and applauded its work. He congratulated them on their 50th anniversary and said Uganda was ready to work with it in future as manifested in the last 17 years, a press release from State House, said.
Dr. Fred Wabwire Mangeni, Makerere University received the AAI Distinguished Alumni Award for his role in the country's battle against AIDS.
Kenyan Dr. Mariam Were was awarded for being one of the world's leading research scientist in public health with expertise in prevention and control of HIV/AIDS.
Museveni said the AGOA scheme was the first act of great solidarity between the western world and Africa in the last 500 years. He called upon AAI to strengthen trade and investment sbetween the US and Africa.
