Free Aids Drugs Come January

New Vision (Kampala) - November 3, 2003
Fred Ouma

DISTRICT hospitals in the country will start dispensing free anti-retroviral (ARVs) drugs in January.

THE Director General of Health Services, Prof. Francis Omaswa, said on Friday the Government would dispatch the drugs to hospitals to be distributed to wananchi, especially poor patients who cannot afford them.

Omaswa said a committee to oversee the process had been formed.

He added that the hospitals would liaise with local councils to identify needy cases who would be given priority.

"It is possible to start giving ARVs at no cost particularly to the rural poor who cannot afford and lack access to the drugs," Omaswa said.

He, however, said this required beefing up the health sector and ensuring that healthcare providers are knowledgeable and render quality service to avoid misuse of ARVs.

Omaswa was launching the inaugural Philly Lutaaya Memorial Lecture in Kampala.

The lecture was organised by Quality Chemicals together with Cipla of India and the Uganda Aids Commission.

The managing director Quality Chemicals, Emmanuel Katongole, said the lecture was meant to promote debate on HIV/AIDS and honour Lutaaya for diligently creating awareness on the AIDS pandemic in the country.
