New Vision (Kampala) - October 27, 2003
Anne Mugisa

The Chairman of the National Guidance and Empowerment network of People Living with HIV/AIDS, Maj. Rubaramira Ruranga said 8,700 die of HIV/AIDS every day.

He said while the initiatives like the Global Fund and WHO emergency response, to deliver ARV to three million people by 2005 are good, the immediate need of another three million people to access the ARVs is ignored.

Rubaramira was speaking during the 11th International Conference for People Living with HIV/AIDS that opened yesterday at the International Conference Centre in Kampala.

The conference is organised by the Global Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS. It has attracted with 800 delegates, 200 from Uganda.

The network commended President Yoweri Museveni saying his personal commitment had ensured sustained government prevention efforts, as well as community care for the people with HIV/AIDS.

Museveni opened the Conference.

"The inequalities between rich and poor threaten existing development. Billions of dollars of both private and public money must be invested, in addition to the existing debt reduction so many developing countries urgently need," a statement from the Global Network of People living with HIV/AIDS, said.
