Government Opens Bids for AIDS Drugs

New Vision (Kampala) - October 24, 2003
Anne Mugisa

The Government has opened bids for the purchase of the first batch of the long-awaited Anti-Retroviral drugs worth US$3m (sh6b).

Uganda AIDS Commission director general Dr. Kihumuro Apuuli said the first batch of the ARV is likely to be imported into the country early next year. He said the bids, which were opened on Monday, are being evaluated.

Kihumuro said the first beneficiaries of the drugs will be 200 orphans at Mildmay, the Academic Alliance for AIDS Care and Prevention in Africa, based in Mulago, and the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC).

Kihumuro, UAC director for policy and research Prof. John Rwomushana and the acting minister for the the Presidency, Prof. Omwony Ojok, were addressing journalists at the weekly press briefing yesterday.

Kihumuro said Mildmay and the Academic Alliance would provide the drugs free while JCRC will initially sell them at subsidised rates.

He warned that people decampaigning condom use and sexual abstinence as useless in prevention of AIDS cause unnecessary deaths. He said condoms were as valid in the HIV/AIDS fight as abstinence and faithfulness.
