Embrace People With HIV - Imam

New Vision (Kampala) - October 24, 2003
Mariam Nalunkuuma

THE general secretary of the Uganda Muslim Youth Assembly (UMYA), Imam Idi Kasozi, has advised religious leaders not to shun people infected with HIV/AIDS.

"Religious leaders must change their attitude towards married couples with HIV/AIDS," Kasozi said. He said the clergy tend to avoid such couple thinking that they contracted the disease through immorality.

"Many couples did not contract the disease through promiscuity. We we should take the initiative of counselling them to prevent families from breaking."

Kasozi said the leaders had not played their role of counselling married people infected with the virus.

"The clergy should use our positions and preach to the congregations on the way AIDS is spread and how the public can protect itself from contracting it," he added.

Kasozi was recently at a three-day national HIV/AIDS workshop for the UMYA district co-ordinators at Kibuli Nursing Training School in Kampala.
