Firm Gives Sh1b for Aids

New Vision (Kampala) - October 23, 2003
Fred Ouma

A LEADING US-based pharmaceutical company, Glaxosmithkline, has earmarked US$500,000 (sh1b) for Uganda Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (UBC), the Institute for Youth Development chief, Shepherd Smith, has said.

UBC is a non-governmental organisation that promotes HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention at the workplace.

It has branches in Kampala, Masaka and Jinja districts.

Smith said the money was in acknowledgement of the confidence the US government had in the HIV/AIDS policies of the Uganda Government.

He said this on Monday while meeting the health minister, Jim Muhwezi, at the ministry headquarters in Wandegeya.

Smith, who led a five-man delegation from US, said they were in Uganda to discuss AIDS treatment and to help the youth and the poor in vocational training.

He said the poor people living with HIV/AIDS would be able to access the drugs. He hailed the Government's effort in the fight against AIDS.

"Uganda was the first country to undertake a wider approach in the fight against the disease. Together with other donors we shall support its activities," Smith said.

Muhwezi commended Glaxosmithkline for the support.

"You are saving human beings. I hope more people will get the services they need through this support," Muhwezi said.

Present at the function was the AIDS Control Programme manager, Dr. Elizabeth Madraa and Dr. Dickson Opul, the UBS director.
