The British Medical Research Council (MRC) through its Uganda project, will try two microbicides, Dextrin Sulphate and Pro 2000, on up to 1,000 women in Masaka district mid next year.
MRC in collaboration with Nsambya Hospital have already completed the first and second phase trials for Dextrin Sulphate.
The results from previous trials have shown that it is safe and acceptable but the planned en masse trial will be used to find out whether they can actually prevent HIV infection.
Phase two trials of Pro 2000 are still on going. Dr Anatoli Kamali, an epidemiologist with the MRC team in Uganda, said the planned trials will not be affected by the results of the Pro 2000 trial bugan in last June.
