Mayors Forge US-Uganda Aids Partnership

New Vision (Kampala) - September 8, 2003
Edris Kisambira

Three US mayors have proposed a sharing of expertise in the HIV/AIDS fight between their cities and Kampala and other municipalities in Uganda.

The mayors want to work with Uganda in the fight against the two-decade old epidemic.

Jack Ellis (Macon, Georgia), Victor Ashe (Knoxville, Tennessee) and Elizabeth Kautz (Burnsville, Minnesota) were here to find out more on Uganda's progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

The mayors, members of the US Conference of Mayors, were invited by the Alliance of Mayors and Municipal Leaders on HIV/AIDS in Africa (AMICAAL).

Jinja is to twin with Macon in Georgia to share expertise on HIV/AIDS and explore ways of attracting investors from the US.

Ellis proposed the twinning of his state capital, Atlanta, with Kampala.

The US mayors and Kampala mayor John Ssebaana Kizito were addressing a press conference at the city council chambers on Friday.
