New Vision (Kampala) - December 19, 2002
Charles Kakamwa
Sulaiman Walya, the representative of PLWA, said some teachers were dismissed by some district education officers on grounds that they are HIV-positive. Walya was speaking at celebrations to mark the World AIDS Day at Igamba village in Mayuge district recently. The theme of the day was "Stigma and discrimination."
He said many teachers were denied further training and promotions although they had good academic papers.
"HIV/AIDS-positive people remain human beings and still need to enjoy their rights like any other person. In fact, we should be catered for before others," he said.
Walya said the community led HIV/AIDS initiative (CHAI) project had also refused to recruit some of their members contrary to its objective.
