Taso Moves to Northern Uganda

New Vision (Kampala) - December 18, 2002
Dismus Buregyeya

TASO has finally agreed to establish a permanent centre in northern Uganda to offer support to the HIV/Aids victims.

Dr. Alex Cautihno, the TASO chief executive officer, said this during a graduation ceremony for USAID-sponsored orphans at the TASO office in Masaka Hospital on Thursday.

"We have therefore decided to open up TASO services next year because the HIV/Aids-affected people in the northern Uganda deserve special assistance," he said.

Cautihno, who handed over vocational tools worth sh50m to over 100 graduands, said TASO staff were scared of working in northern Uganda because of the insecurity.

He said USAID had allocated US$2.5m to support at least 2,500 children of TASO clients in accessing vocational skills for the next five years.

He urged the public to emulate the late Philly Lutaaya by being open about HIV/Aids.
