Refugees to Get Free HIV Drugs

New Vision (Kampala) - December 11, 2002
Charles Ariko

THE United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will soon start distributing free Nevirapine drugs to expectant mothers in refugee camps in order to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Nevirapine, in use in most hospitals in the country, prevents mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS.

Paul Spiegel, a senior UNHCR technical officer, yesterday said the UN organisation would also carry out several programmes in conjunction the Government and NGOs to sensitise refugees about the dangers of the pandemic.

Spiegel was speaking at a regional workshop for UNHCR staff and selected NGOs from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, at Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel in Entebbe.

He said although most camps had counselling and voluntary testing services, more programmes were needed to give refugees equal opportunities like other people.

The UNHCR representative in Uganda, Saihou Saidy, said the difficult conditions and the poverty under which the refugees lived, made them vulnerable to many diseases.
