New Vision (Kampala) - December 11, 2002
Japheth Obuku
"Marry only one wife," he intoned as the Jopadhola living in Kampala, Jinja, Entebbe and others from Tororo listened at an end of year party at Naguru Community Centre.
"Men who marry more than one wife should stop it because they encourage the spread of HIV/AIDS. As the man goes to sleep with one of the women, he leaves the other wives in the cold and sexually wanting," he went on.
"This tempts these women to sneak to the immediate neighbour (man) in search of sexual satisfaction and this may lead to catching the disease," Obbo warned.
He discouraged unmarried people from relying on condoms, but observe abstinence as the best measure against HIV/AIDS infection.
"A polygamous family means many children in a home. When the parents of these children die, that big number is left behind as orphans, which would not be the case if the man had only one wife," he said.
Over 300 Jopadhola, among them Tororo LC5 chairman Nuwa Owora, Tororo Municipality MP Yeri Ofwono and Tieng Adhola officials attended.
Owora urged the Jopadhola to continue with the spirit of unity for the sake of development in Tororo.
