Uganda Gets $36m to Fight Aids

New Vision (Kampala) - November 16, 2002

EMPHASIS: AIDS Control Programme chief Elizabeth Madraa talks to participants

THE Government is to receive US$36m under the Global Fund for HIV/AIDS to fight the AIDS pandemic, reports Martin Kiiza.

The health advisor with the Department for International Development (DFID) of the British government for overseas development, Ros Cooper, said the project would be implemented within two to three years, beginning this year.

Cooper was on November 7 addressing the Uganda Network of Aids Service Organisations (UNASO) Annual General Meeting at Hotel Africana in Kampala.

He said more funds would be accessed by the Government for the treatment of malaria, tuberculosis and other diseases. She commended UNASO for effectively co-ordinating HIV/AIDS networks.

The director research Uganda Aids Commission , Prof. John Rwomushana, urged the participants to include income generating activities in their HIV/AIDS programmes, saying the two go together. He urged stakeholders to promote partnership at district level to strengthen the struggle.

"Look for focal points to promote the struggle," Rwomushana said. Ends
