A State House statement said Mrs Museveni was furthering the "Save the Next Generation from HIV/AIDS" campaign. The President's Press Secretary, Mary Karooro Okurut, said the campaign was started in the early 1990s by the Uganda Youth Forum. Janet is the patron.
The campaign's theme is: True Love Waits or Abstinence from pre-marital sex. Addressing the students, Mrs. Museveni said as future leaders, they should take care of their intellectual and spiritual needs to become responsible citizens.
She expressed sadness that many young people in Uganda have resorted to alcoholism and drug abuse to cover up their social and spiritual shortcomings.
Mrs. Museveni appealed to students to desist from such negative behaviour that has brought many up-coming youth to a premature end.
She said Uganda Youth Forum was a non-partisan, interdenominational non-governmental organisation that emphasises abstinence from pre-marital sex among the youth as a way of combating HIV/AIDS and other STDs.
She warned the students against peer pressure.
Uganda Youth Forum chief Dr. Sam Luboga said the organisation was formed to advocate for the needs and benefits of the Ugandan youth and give them a joint voice of articulating their views.
