Museveni Advises Cadets On Aids

New Vision (Kampala) - November 11, 2002
Jonathan Angura

PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has cautioned the newly commissioned army cadets against reckless and immoral sexual behaviours to avoid contracting the HIV/AIDS.

He said this at the pass-out of over 1,692 cadet officers who completed their training in Jinja Military Academy, Gaddaffi barracks, on Friday. Museveni advised them to exercise patience in their sexual lives.

He told them that if they feel ready for marriage, they should undergo medical examinations to ascertain their HIV/AIDS status.

"When you live this place, women and men will be waiting for you out there saying Mzee's (Museveni) children are back. Be careful with them, look after your lives properly. Do not behave like pigs which move and knock here and there," Museveni said.

He said it was regrettable that the army was loosing its trained officers to HIV/AIDS.

Museveni called upon the cadet officers to respect civilians and their property.

On development, Museveni said although Africa had more resources than Asia, the latter was more developed because Africa had wasted four decades practicing barbarism and killing each other.

He cited Singapore where he said it was a small country which in 1959 had per-capita income of US$400 while Uganda had US$200 but had grown to US$22,000. Uganda still lags behind.

The UPDF chief of training, Col. Benon Biraro, advised the cadets to live balanced lives and make decision making, leading and motivating subordinates their trademarks at all levels.
