School HIV/Aids Manual Ready

New Vision (Kampala) - October 30, 2002
Charles Wendo

President Yoweri Museveni's ambition to protect school children from HIV/AIDS is taking shape.

The presidential advisor on HIV/AIDS, Dr. Jesse Kagimba, yesterday said a manual was ready for primary school teachers to begin educating their pupils on HIV/AIDS.

The manual will among other things help teachers train school girls to elude lustful men. It also contains general information on HIV and how to prevent infection, as well as other dangers of engaging in sex at an early age.

The Ministry of Education prepared the manual with the help of the Ministry of Health and the Uganda AIDS Commission. They are preparing a second one for secondary schools, which will go deeper into sex education. This is a follow up of a directive Museveni made early this year, that all schools should introduce sex education.

Kagimba said teachers should learn the manual like the back of their palms and use it to address pupils at least once a week. "Failure to impart this knowledge to the young people would mean future disasters," Kagimba warned.

He was speaking to The New Vision during the on-going national AIDS conference at the Kampala International Conference Centre.

He said the school AIDS programme was a good opportunity to protect close to 10 million children and teenagers in schools.

The World Health Organisation representative, Dr. Walker Oladapo, said girls of school going age were most vulnerable. He said the future prosperity of a nation depends on young people.
