Pope Gives Sh900m to Fight Aids

New Vision (Kampala) - October 29, 2002
Richard Komakech

Pope John Paul II has donated US$500,000 (about sh900m) towards the fight against AIDS in Uganda.

The donation was announced by the President of the Papal Charity Cor Unum, Archbishop Josef Cordes, during mass to mark the Kampala Archdiocese day at Rubaga cathedral on Sunday.

"Fighting against AIDS in Uganda has been very strong and here you stand as an example. The Holy Father now wants to share with you in the fight against the deadly disease for the health and good-will of the people," Cordes said.

The donation will be channelled through the church to help children orphaned by AIDS and other AIDS victims.

Cordes said, "Coming to Uganda, I realise that Africans have so much to show to the universal church and first world."

"The Holy father has congratulated Uganda upon the beatification of their two martyrs, Daudi Okello and Gildo Irwa," he said.

He said this was a sign that evangelism had sunk deep in the hearts of Africans.

"Africans have known the faith better than in Europe where I come from. Go ahead and evangelise the societies as an example."

Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala led the mass, assisted by the Papal envoy Archbishop Christophe Pierre and bishop Christopher Kakooza.
