New Vision (Kampala) - October 24, 2002
Charles Wendo

The death toll from AIDS is approaching one million. The HIV surveillance report released yesterday indicates that 947,552 people died of AIDS between the onset of the epidemic in the early 1980s and the beginning of this year, writes Charles Wendo.

This was an increase from an estimate of 848,492 at the end of 2000, meaning that about 99,000 Ugandans died of AIDS from January to December 2001.

Health minister Brig. Jim Muhwezi, yesterday released the Surveillance Report at the ministry headquarters.

Of the dead, 427,153 were women, 425,644 men while 94,755 were children aged below 15. The estimates were based on computer projections.
