"I am happy to learn that Cuba has already acquired the technology to manufacture AIDS drugs. It would be good and cheaper if these drugs were manufactured here," he said.
Muhwezi, who met the Cuban Ambassador to Uganda, Ricardo A. Dawza, at the ministry headquarters in Kampala, accepted an invitation to visit Cuba. "During my visit, I will discuss how this technology (to manufacture AIDS drugs) can be transferred here," Muhwezi said.
He received literature on anti-retroviral technology from the ambassador and welcomed Cuba plan to start supplying cheap AIDS drugs to Africa.
"It is good for Cuba to put the drugs on the market at reasonable prices because that will force other manufacturers to lower their prices," he said. Muhwezi said AIDS was a disease for the poor who cannot afford drugs, especially when they are faced with opportunistic diseases.
