Maurice Okore writes that the drugs, which were for free distribution to poor HIV/AIDS patients, were reportedly found being sold in private clinics and pharmacies. The fourteen suspects were on September 24 charged with possession of stolen AIDS drugs.
They were released on a sh300,000 bail each. They are said to be part of a countrywide racket.
They included Herbert Masayi, Regina Babara, Juliet Katabira, Fred Serubura, Robert Segawa and his wife Rebecca.
Others were Patrick Mugalu, Florence Namugere, Vincent Kaga, Peter Malinga, Alice Semanda, Rebecca Segaira and Florence Naliwana.
The suspects appeared yesterday before the Buganda Road Court Principal Magistrate, Charles Sserubuga, but they did not plead to the charge because their lawyer Caleb Alaka objected to it.
Alaka said his clients, who had appeared for mention of the earlier charge, had been ambushed by the State with a new charge.
