George Bita reports that the Cardinal said the trend was caused by the lack of sensitisation on HIV/AIDS amongst older people with most organisations involved in the exercise only targeting youths.
"But most of these elders did not grow up with this new strange disease. That is the reason why most of them believe they can use money to buy drugs for their ailing offspring," he said.
He appealed to local governments and NGOs to plan and budget for programmes of elderly people, including education on HIV/AIDS.
Cardinal Wamala, who is the chairman of Uganda Reach the Aged Association, said this on Tuesday during national celebrations to mark the UN day of elderly persons.
The function was held at Buyanga sub-county headquarters in Bugweri county, Iganga district.
