AMREF Trains 2,800 HIV/Aids Peer-Educators

New Vision (Kampala) - September 28, 2002
Kenneth Otim

THE African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF) has trained 2,800 HIV/AIDS peer-educators in Kumi, Soroti, and Katakwi districts.

The AMREF programme manager, Moses Omiat, said the peer-educators, mostly students and science teachers in primary and secondary schools, would preach the dangers of early sex involvement.

He said the message would be transmitted through poems and drama clubs. Statistics by AMREF showed that in 1992, 11% of school children had had sex but the ratio dropped to 3.3% in 2001.

"We have decided that pupils and students be taught about HIV/AIDS everyday and we have selected headteachers and science teachers to do this," he said.

About 700 T-shirts were given to the peer-educators, pupils and students in Katakwi district.

To facilitate the peer educators, 47 bicycles and a motorcycle were donated to each district.

The Soroti health educator said 19.3% of girls aged 12-19 years had still births.

He said in Soroti, 73% of girls above 18 years had lost their virginity and 50% of girls above 15 had already had sex and had contracted sexually transmitted infections.
