Uganda is among the few African countries that have adopted the online campaign against HIV/AIDS and used it to produce substantial results.

The campaign involves the use of information communication technology (ICT) as a way of fighting the HIV pandemic in the world through awareness, prevention and education programmes.

The project manager of the World Bank's World Links for Development (WORLD), Anthony Bloome, on Tuesday said the use of ICT had raised awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention activities, particularly among the youth.

"This programme has been working since 1996 and has collaborated with the Ministry of Education and other departments to explore the use of ICT for enhancing the campaign against HIV/AIDS. Fortunately, results have been produced," Bloome said.

He was addressing delegates at a three-day HIV/AIDS and information technology workshop at Collinne Hotel, Mukono.

"We have established in Uganda a national network of rural schools provided with internet connectivity. We also have over 1,000 Internet learning centres in schools around the world and reaching an estimated 200,000 students and teachers through professional development training activities," he said.

Delegates from Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Botswana and other stakeholders in HIV/AIDS programs attended.
