Police Probes NMS Over HIV/Aids Drugs

New Vision (Kampala) - September 25, 2002
Geoffrey Kamali

THE CID is investigating the National Medical Stores (NMS) and health centres nationwide over theft of life-support Diflucan drugs recently donated for the needy AIDS patients in Uganda.

The drugs, which were for free distribution to poor HIV/AIDS patients, were found being sold in private pharmacies and clinics by undercover detectives, who posed as buyers.

Sources at the CID headquarters said yesterday they were investigating whether the drugs were actually distributed to the 110 health centres all over the country as shown by a list given to health minister Brig. Jim Muhwezi.

"We are not leaving anything to chance. We've already worked out a programme with other agencies to go to all the centres, including the NMS," the source said.

The team, which comprises officers from the CID, the National Drug Authority (NDA) and ministry of health officials, has divided themselves into four groups, each visiting one region in the south, west, east and the north.

Sources said yesterday the World Health Organisation (WHO) local office sent a team of its own investigators to audit the drugs distribution.

Fifteen suspects have already been arrested in Kampala and Jinja with 18 bottles of the drugs, each containing 28 tablets.
