New Vision (Kampala) - September 24, 2002
James Bakunzi
According to Mr. Sunday Abwola, the Northern Uganda area programme co-ordinator for HIV/AIDS, the disease will be fought through community sensitisation and building capacity and understanding of the civil society in the area about HIV/AIDS issues.
He told The New Vision at the weekend that the funds have been availed by international NGOs NOVIB, COMIC relief agency and DFID. The money will be channelled through the ACORD country office.
Abwola said districts to benefit include Adjuman and Moyo in West Nile region, Gulu, Kitgum and Pader in Acholi sub-region, and Kotido, Moroto and Nakapiripirit in pastoral areas.
"Our research indicates that given the on-going insurgency in Northern Uganda, we think that our people are caught up in difficult circumstances because of massive displacement, vulnerability to diseases and social economic break down," he said.
"We shall target the youth in these areas to improve access to services and information to enable them become agents of change within their communities," he said.
He said the project will also focus on the need to improve household incomes and survival strategies for vulnerable groups in the northern region.
