'Help HIV/Aids Patients Live Longer'

New Vision (Kampala) - September 14, 2002
Kenneth Otim

SOROTI LC5 chairman Capt. John Emily Otekat has said stigma against AIDS patients in Teso region has increased their rate of death.

He said people in Teso looked at AIDS as a sinful disease and shunned patients by denying them medical treatment.

"Discrimination of AIDS patients speeds up the rate of death among them but love for them will enable them live longer," Otekat said.

He made the remarks during the launch of the anti-stigma campaign on AIDS under the theme "Tell the truth about AIDS," at Soroti public gardens recently.

It was organised by the Uganda Red Cross Society and the AIDS control programme.

Otekat said a person who is infected with HIV was useful to society until his death.

Oteka urged parents to talk to their children about the dangers of acquiring the disease and having premarital sex.

He urged the youth to abstain from sex in order to spare their generation and fight the virus.

"Some youths ask that, how do you eat a sweet when its covered but I advise you to always use a condom if you can't abstain," he said.

The district director of health services, Dr. Nicholas Okwana, urged health workers to create a friendly environment. Ends
