Sam Alutia, the KASO acting manager, said this at a four-week training workshop on HIV/AIDS for 11 counsellors held at Stay Free Restaurant in Kumi town.
He said the official cumulative report said over 1,300 people had declared their status but most of them had died.
"Estimates by multiplier effect stands 6,500 people affected with HIV/AIDS virus. For every person affected by this scourge, there may be four others with the disease, representing 51% for females and 49% for males," Alutia said.
He said 84% of the cases were spread by sexual contact while 14% were spread from mother to unborn babies.
Alutia said despite messages by the Government over the media houses, Kumi district had not received any free Aids drug.
Meanwhile, Kenneth Otim reports that Soroti district and the municipal council are to receive sh200m and 90m from the Uganda Mayors Initiative to fight HIV/AIDS and the Uganda Aids control programme.
Soroti mayor George Michael Egunyu and the district director of health services, Dr. Nicholas Okwana, said this at the Soroti Lukiiko hall.
Egunyu said NGOs dealing with HIV/AIDS in the municipality would be given money after presenting their plans.
