Muhwezi Calls for War Against TB/Aids

New Vision (Kampala) - December 4, 2001
Joyce Namutebi

Uganda should be "moved onto a war footing" to fight AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria, health minister Jim Muhwezi has said.

He was yesterday opening a workshop for the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria (GFATM) in Jinja.

He said globally malaria killed over one million people in the year 2000, AIDS about three million people and TB 1.7 million people.

"Every minute we have been sitting in this room, 10 people have died of the three diseases HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. This translates into 15,000 people a day. This is not only appaling and tragic. it is scandalous," Muhwezi said. He said, "Addressing the challenges posed by HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other communicable diseases must be part of a unified response." Muhwezi said the three diseases cause 25% of all deaths world-wide. He said the global fund was one response to combat the diseases.

He said Uganda sees the fund as an additional supplement to strengthen the national effort to combat the diseases. He said the government had established interim arrangements to manage the country process in respect of the fund.

He said an inter-ministerial committee has been set up headed by the Minister of Health to provide policy direction. Also set up was an inter-agency task force chaired by the Director General for Health Services.
