ABOUT 30,000 babies in Uganda are born with HIV, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, the Minister Without Portfolio, told Parliament yesterday.

Kiyonga, who is chairman of the Transitional Working Group to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, was giving a ministerial statement on the progress made in fighting the diseases.

He said The AIDS Support Organisation (TASO) was recently appointed by the UN Secretary General as one of the two non governmental organisations (NGOs) representing the World NGO sector on the Transitional Working Group.

"Every year 600,000 babies are brought into the world when they are already infected with HIV. In Uganda it is estimated that nearly 30,000 babies are affected in this way annually," he said.

Kiyonga asked Parliament to form a standing committee on AIDS.
