'Expose HIV/Aids Victims'

New Vision (Kampala) - November 7, 2001

People who have died of AIDS should be exposed during burial, the state minister for health, Mike Mukula, said on Sunday.

Mukula made the remarks recently during a four-day consultative meeting on HIV/AIDS at Uganda Muslim Supreme Council offices in Old Kampala.

Participants included Muslim leaders from 22 countries in Africa, Asia, USA and the Middle East.

"If one has died of AIDS, let us not say they have died of malaria or tuberculosis. It is the common practice and it spells danger," he said. "We should say it out at the burial grounds that they have actually died of AIDS. Let's get rid of shame to end the danger," Mukula added.

He advised leaders to rise up in the fight against AIDS saying the failure to address it as a critical issue would propagate its spread.

Mukula said he was happy that Muslims had joined efforts to curtail the spread of HIV/AIDS.

The director of the Islamic Medical Association of Uganda, Dr. Majid Kagimu, said they are to establish an office of the Islamic Approach to HIV/AIDS. Ugandas Mufti, Sheik Shaban Mubajje attended.
