Busia Launches HIV/Aids Committee

New Vision (Kampala) - November 6, 2001
David Wanyama

Busia district has launched an HIV/AIDs committee with a call on the members to be dedicated by effectively implementing the goals of the programme entrusted to them.

The acting Deputy Administrative officer Busia, Mr. Vincent Adeya, told guests at the launching ceremony at Mabrose Restaurant on Wednesday that since everybody in the community has been affected by AIDS, the task should not be taken lightly.

Adeya said, everybody should be at the fore front in the fight against the disease. The district director of health services, Dr. Oundo Bwire, called for collective responsibility in the fight against AIDS by all the stake holders. The programme will be funded by the community HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI), under UNICEF and the World Bank.

Busia like most border districts has a high rate of HIV/AIDS infection due to thriving prostitution characteristic of border towns.

Long distance truck drivers are the biggest customers of the sex workers.
