Student leaders from five Kampala secondary schools said at the closure of a three-day training workshop on HIV/AIDS peer educators at Makerere High School, Wandegeya on Thursday said many of them resort to unprotected sex because there are no teenage-friendly sources in the outlets.
"It is very difficult for a student to ask their parents for money to buy condoms and even when they have it, they fear to buy them because they are shy," Caroline Hasahya, a peer leader at Makerere College School told The New Vision.
"While it is easier for boys, it is worse for girls because drug shop operators look at them badly and make them feel immoral. The supplying companies should visit schools and distribute condoms to students at least twice a month," she said.
"This would be a better strategy. All students regardless of whether they are sexually active or not would go for the condoms without being embarrassed," Hasahya added.
She said students avoid buying condoms for fear of being found.
