The Director General of Uganda Aids commission, Dr. David Kihumuro Apuuli, yesterday said the dropping rates were skewed towards the urban sites where the weighted average dropped from 10.9% in 1999 to 8.7% as compared to 4.3% to 4.2% in rural areas.
He was briefing journalists at the AIDS Commission offices in Kampala, to highlight the world AIDS campaign, a programme that culminates into the World AIDS Day on December 1 every year.
Kihumuro was flanked by the UNAIDS/UAC Programme Officer International Partnership against AIDS in Africa, Ms. Inge Jack, and Uganda Network of AIDS Service Organisations Administrative Assistant Lillian Mworeko.
He, however, said the number of AIDS cases had continued to rise as a result of a large pool of HIV infected people who fall sick. The surveillance report indicates a cumulative total of 58,165 AIDS cases from 55,861 in 1999. Of the 55,861, 92.6% are adults.
Kihumuro said increased advocacy, pragmatic activities and initiatives around HIV/AIDS related issues should be promoted.
