AIDS Conference Drafts Action Plan

The New Vision (Uganda) - September 13, 2001
John Eremu

DELEGATES at the ongoing HIV prevention conference in Kampala have come up with a draft calling for comprehensive programmes to eradicate or drastically reduce vertical transmission of HIV from mothers to infants.

The document code-named The Kampala Call To Action, noted that the major obstacles to preventing HIV infection of infants had been removed.

The statement pointed out that clinical trials had conclusively demonstrated that Zidovudine (AZT) given to HIV infected women during the later part of pregnancy, and for six weeks given to their infants along with formula feeding, could reduce HIV infection of infants by 67%.

"We call for immediate action for nations to implement countrywide programme to prevent HIV infection of infants, to identify HIV infected women, and to provide treatment for HIV infected children and mothers," the statement said.

"This action must include the creation of information programmes to raise international awareness of mother to child issues, the establishment of programmes to prevent prenatal care and treatment, acquisition and distribution of drugs to prevent prenatal HIV transmission, the elimination of laws that delay access to life-saving drugs and the procurement of funds that directly benefit children and women at risk of HIV infection," it added.

The four-day conference closes today.
