HIV Could Spread Due to Drugs - Expatriate

The New Vision (Uganda) - August 21, 2001

Kampala - A BRITISH expatriate on social development, Moris Barns, attached to Kabarole Research Centre in Fort Portal has warned of the accelerated spread of HIV due to the introduction of Aids drugs.

"People may relax in taking precaution on their sexual behaviours with the coming of the HIV/AIDS drugs and this will spread the disease further," he warned.

Barns said this at a meeting with the executive members of the Kasese district development network at Rukoki, district headquarters.

He called on all stakeholders in the fight against HIV/AIDS to double their efforts in sensitising the communities about the disease. Barns told executive members of Banyo Development Foundation based in Kasese town at a separate meeting, to take into account the culture of different communities when sensitising them about HIV/AIDS.

"There is a reason for a community behaving the way it does. Others are small communities and so they want to produce as many children as possible and they can do this only through sex. Such issues should be considered when teaching them about the disease," he said. Barns advised the organisations involved in sensitisation against the spread of HIV/AIDS to study the cultures in their operation areas.
